Exercise across the Cancer Care Continuum

Exercise is becoming more recognised as an integral part of the treatment process and Cancer Care Continuum.

Exercise Physiologists play a key role in providing safe, individualised exercise prescription before, during and after cancer treatment. Exercise prescriptions must be tailored to the phase of the cancer trajectory.

Exercise helps cancer patients prepare for treatments, cope with treatments, and recover after treatments. From a cancer treatment perspective, exercise may help cancer patients complete treatments, respond to treatments, and lower their risk of recurrence and death from cancer

Exercise to address side effects of cancer treatment

Recent research has demonstrated that exercise has the ability to help ease side effects from cancer treatment.

These side effects may include:

  • Fatigue

  • Anaemia

  • Quality of life

  • Mood changes

  • Loss of muscle strength

  • Cardiac complications

  • Loss of bone strength

  • Lymphoedema

  • Reduce range of motion through affected areas (e.g. shoulders)

  • Poor balance and coordination

  • Peripheral neuropathy

Another side effect of cancer treatment includes low white cell count (neutropenia) which results in individuals becoming immunocompromised and at risk of developing infection. Having a mobile exercise physiologist come to you helps remove the unnecessary exposure to public spaces such as gyms and swimming pools and enables the delivery of individualised exercise programs within the home.
