Exercise For Neurological Conditions

A regular exercise routine prescribed in the home by an exercise physiologist has the ability to create a safe environment for individuals with a neurological condition to exercise. Exercise has the ability to support individuals to maintain independence and to continue performing their regular activities of daily living.

We have extensive experience working with Neurological Disorders

Exercise for Neurological Conditions

Research has shown there is a strong link between physical exercise and the prevention or delay of neuro-degenerative symptoms, including motor skills and mental capacity in patients with neuro-diseases.

An exercise program for Neurological conditions may include:

  • Balance and motor control (coordination): To assist with gait and balance issues which may contribute to an increased risk of falls and consequent risk of fractures/ injury. whilst addressing individual functional movements deficits e.g. Sitting to standing, bending over.

  • Flexibility and mobility: A combination of different types of stretching (dynamic, static, passive and active) to address muscular stiffness and increase range of motion.

  • Strength/ Progressive Resistance training: To increase muscle strength and prevent/ slow muscle wastage through functional movement patterns performed during day to day activities (e.g. stair ascending/ descending, walking (gait) and sitting to standing.).

  • Cardiovascular fitness: To improve functional endurance to be able to perform more activities of daily living, to decrease risk of developing cardiovascular diseases associated with reduced activity and a sedentary lifestyle.
