Frequently Asked Questions
What is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist?
Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPS) are university qualified allied health professionals that specialise in the design and delivery of safe and effective exercise interventions for people with chronic medical conditions, injuries and disabilities. AEPs are recognised and are claimable under compensable schemes such as Medicare and most private health insurers
Do I see an Accredited Exercise Physiologist or a Physiotherapist?
A question that we come across a lot is what is the difference between the two. Both Accredited Exercise Physiologists and Physiotherapists completed a minimum of 4 years study at university and specialise in treating similar conditions. There is some overlap in treating timeframes with some conditions as it is very patient specific however a good question to ask yourself in deciding who to see is: 1. “How long have I had this injury/condition for?” 2. “Is this a reoccurring injury that wasn’t addressed previously with passive treatment (i.e. massage, dry needling)?”
Acute injuries (>3 months - 6 months)
Physiotherapists are trained to deal with acute injuries and use passive treatment methods to assist with managing pain symptoms, swelling/inflammation and maintaining/increasing range of motion within the affected area. Simple exercises are sometimes also used to assist with regaining strength and maintaining the range of motion.
Chronic Injuries / medical conditions (>3- 6 months)
Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEP) use exercise as their main form of treatment, and this is where the cross over occurs between Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists. AEP’s are more highly trained in exercise prescription to deal with some conditions and use this to rehabilitate patients back to their previous functional capacity (and even better!).
Where can I receive the mobile servicing?
Now more than ever, reminding everyone of remaining physically active to support our immune system has become important due to the potential impact of COVID-19. Exercising at home has all the same benefits as exercising within a gym setting if your program is tailored to your rehabilitation needs. That is why we believe that having a mobile service allows for greater flexibility for the patient and meets their individual goals. What’s more specific then prescribing and delivering a home exercise program… in your own home?
Is travel included in the price?
Travel is included in the price to the location of your choosing. For NDIS and Work Cover patients, gazetted rates may apply.
Do I need a doctors referral to be treated by an Exercise Physiologist?
For a general consultation a referral is not needed to book in with an AEP, however if your condition is considered “Chronic” (i.e. long term) you may be eligible for a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) (Formerly known as an Enhanced Primary Care (EPC)) plan. This plan includes 5 subsidised sessions with an allied health professional every calendar year (12 months) through Medicare Benefit Schedule. More information on CDM plans and eligibility are in this PDF: MBS Chronic Disease Management & Allied Health Fact Sheet.pdf
