Osteopenia / Osteoporosis
Physical activity and structured exercise may reduce the risk of osteoporotic fractures, a debilitating but highly preventable outcome of osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis
A skeletal disease that is characterised by low bone mineral density, as is common amongst women ages. It is more common in women than in men, in 2018, 29% of women aged over 75 had osteoporosis compared with only 10% of men. Osteopenia is essentially the stages before osteoporosis where bone mineral density is lower than normal but not low enough to be classified as osteoporosis.
A structured exercise program has the ability to reduce the risk by enhancing the peak bone mass achieved during growth and development, by slowing the rate of bone loss with aging, and/or reducing the risk of falls via benefits on muscle strength and balance.
